Save the Cat

Save The Cat! The Last Book on Screenwriting You'll Ever Need by Blake Snyder is awesome! Tim Ferriss recommended it in a post and he was right. It is geared towards scripts of course, but it is really helpful for telling any kind of story.  I will give you a tidbit of what is included.  The book is really detailed, but not long and really fun.  Here’s how the author breaks down all movies – try it, it works!  The numbers in parenthesis are page numbers for your script.  Isn’t it amazing?

A few weeks ago I read Color by Betty Edwards: A Course in Mastering the Art of Mixing Colors.  I had read another of her books: Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain and taken a drawing class based on the book in Los Angeles. I still can’t draw (in my opinion) but her writing is clear, concise and informative.  I have been fascinated with color for as long as I can remember.  I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to read a book about it!  I had read one previously that was more about how many colors there are, this one was more about making the colors yourself – much more to my liking!  It walked me through creating my own color wheel.

I will admit it was not a task for the undetermined.  I had quite the adventure of finally getting all the paints I needed and completing the wheel.  Some of the colors weren’t exactly what I wanted, but that’s okay!  I painted in the colors from a flower template I found on the web.  Here is the finished product!  It only took me two weeks!

Color Wheel

I had a lot of fun.  The green I had wasn’t a perfect green, but I had already committed and didn’t want to start over!  I had to run to the store three times before I got the right colors for orange and blue (my original colors were dried up), but it was all worth it.  I had a great time, learned a lot and continued mixing the colors to create even more colors.

A coupon in one of my magazines for a sample of paint from Lowe’s lead me in another direction – I thought what the heck – let’s see what that kind of paint can do.  It’s awesome!  Satin finish is exactly what it says it is and painting on paper works out just fine.  I got “Hacienda Tile” which is what you think it is.  I am thinking of designing a tile – that would be fun.  It’s amazing how creative you can get with just a little imagination and paint.  I can’t wait to have space and time to create some of the things I have in mind.

Remember I told you about the awful “perm” days in my last post Hair Today Gone Tomorrow?  Here’s proof – with the last painting I did – I will leave it to you to guess the year!  I have to say the painting should be credited more to my art teacher than to me.  He helped – a lot.  Probably too much actually, I hadn’t opened my paints since then!  I considered myself lucky that any of them were good.
