The Synergist and Me

Just finished The Synergist by Les McKeown.  An excellent book on teamwork along with a website full of helpful worksheets and activities.  I was blown away at all of the free resources Les provides and the emails to follow up.  Very nicely done.

If you are interested, and you should be!  You can take the quiz here it’s free and it will only take you a few minutes.  The results may surprise you, or like me, you may say – I knew that!  But don’t stop there – reading the book is enlightening.  I knew I was a Visionary before I started the quiz, BUT I didn’t realize the consequences that natural style could bring.  I cringed as I read the stories in the book and realized I did that to people.  I LOVE to BRAINSTORM – notice how I capitalized it?  If you call me at 2:00 am – wake me up from a dead sleep and ask me to talk about a business idea – I will – that’s how bad I am.  BUT in my enthusiasm I didn’t realize everyone didn’t exactly appreciate those impromptu idea explosions as much as I did.  I certainly got the message loud and clear in the book and I do apologize for monopolizing discussions, bringing over the top passion to every meeting and wanting to hit the ground running – now, not in 10 minutes, not in a week, but NOW.  I promise here I will do my best to put my Synergist hat on and slow down.  It will be the hardest thing I’ve EVER done.  As it says in the book – this is your natural style – your default.  It takes work to modify and my full attention.  Also a character flaw smiley

There’s a video too that helps explain the scores.  I found it very helpful to see where on the continuum I fell.  Another interesting tidbit I thought was useful was to ask everyone their personal “pet peeves” about the assignment before embarking on the assignment to know ahead of time if they are going to vote one way or another.  For example, the text gave the scenario of a direct mail campaign – one person hates them because they don’t like junk mail and another loves them because they did one last year that was very successful.  These kinds of yes or no behaviors can derail a great campaign due to personal preferences.  The company goals must supersede your own in these situations.  I definitely want to use that one with my next team assignment.

Speaking of team assignments, I can’t wait to get back to work!  I pretty much go with the flow most of the time, but I am really missing co-workers, long-term work goals and teamwork.  Cross your fingers something will happen this week.  I am ready!

Share your quiz results below!  It will be fun to see what everyone gets. I am Visionary 480, Operator 300, Processor 90, Synergist 90.  Proud I have a great combo, but humbled that I have so much room for improvement.  Here’s to learning something everyday cool
