My workout routine last month was a full month of Billy Blanks’ Ultimate Bootcamp.  It was awesome.  I had a great time and I really felt like I was getting a good workout.  This month I decided to change it up with some Yoga – not ordinary Yoga – Yoga Meltdown with Jillian Michaels.  I had tried it a few times years ago but now I do it every day.  It is wonderful!

For the first time I understand “timing your breaths with the movements.”

Last week my mom was in town and since we only had a few days together I didn’t want to spend my normal hour working out and then 15-minute yoga cool-down, so I chose the 20-minute body basics with Valerie .  I even convinced my mom to do it with me on the last day.  She had fun.  I had gotten the DVD years ago and had only done the 20 minute workout.  After my mom left, I went to the 40-minute workout and I found that I really enjoyed it.  I have been doing it 6 days now and every day I seem to activate another muscle and it really feels good.  It’s a great workout, but not at all as strenuous as the ones by Jillian or Billy.  I am not nearly as sore, which is excellent and I still feel like I can walk a few miles.  With the others, honestly, I am tired!  I read one of Valerie’s Books on Friday:  Losing It:  And Gaining my Life Back One Pound at a Time  it was really good, she was very open about her struggles in life, which were many more than expected.  The glimpse into the Van Halen world was also interesting.

I will admit though every morning it is a tug-o-war to get me to turn on the video.  I change into my workout wear almost as soon as I get up so I can’t weasel out of it, but sometimes I will admit, I can procrastinate – especially on social media for way to long.  I have a system down, that I eat, write, then workout – but some mornings I have been writing first, which leaves me a window to check social media.  I don’t like to workout right after I eat, but if I don’t eat first I find that my energy lags in the middle of the workout – especially Jillian’s!  I think everyone has to find what works for them, I am thankful for the time I have had to get back in shape and find out what works for me.  I am going to keep doing the 40-minute work out this week.  Then maybe back to Jillian.  I especially am anxious to do her yoga workout.  As I remember, it was quite a challenge.

Billy Blanks won the contest for the next 3 – 4 weeks of my life.  I have to say I am happy with the decision.  His workout is fast-paced and fun.  It really makes your muscles burn and it feels fantastic.  This week I had to do it without the bands that were included with the DVD because they are in my storage unit, but I am hoping to dig them out this week and start using them too.  I am happy with my progress so far and I sincerely hope I don’t let my exercise routine become a non-priority again.

I have found I really enjoy the karate-type workouts.  It reminds me of when I was studying Shou-Shu at Moore’s Karate while I was in college.  They have 22 locations now – very cool!  I got up to a Blue Belt – it was a lot of fun and a great workout.  The gauntlet was a little scary, but beyond that, it was an incredible learning experience.  I only wish I had the focus then that I have now.  I had a hard time imagining my opponent then, and once you have that, it makes your intensity so much better. This video shows a camp – I only went to one, but it was awesome!

I feel so much better when I am exercising and watching what I eat.  By the way, I couldn’t resist the temptation of chicken. I did some research and not being able to have any dairy or whey pretty much nullifies any protein drink, so I decided the lesser of two evils would be a 4 oz. chicken tenderloin.  No cutting or guessing the size.  Just pop in the microwave and I have a great protein source.  Not to mention, a fantastic addition to tacos!
